The Declining, Ageing and Regional Transformation (DART) project (NEW UPDATE)
In the year 2030 every third person in the European Union will be older than 60 years. People live longer but birth-rates are declining. The majority of European citizens are able to lead an active, participatory and healthy live into an old age.
This brings opportunities to innovative firms through the new
demand for goods and services. However the combination of ageing
societies and declining birth-rates brings economic budgetary and
social challenges with it. The ageing demographic and declining
population threatens to endanger a sustainable economic basis in
many European regions.
A threat for the EU 2020 strategy
This development also seriously endangers the EU 2020
strategy, aiming at a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy by
2020. Regional and local governments play an important role
in dealing with these and many other challenges. They need to
support and undertake projects designed to generate employment,
raise educational achievement, develop renewable energy sources,
boost productivity and give all citizens access to opportunities.
Work together to identify and transfer possible solutions
With the DART project, 13 participating regions work together
to identify and transfer possible solutions and best practices to
the widespread demographic challenge. It provides the opportunity
to work out innovative and integrated solutions aimed to maintain
the quality of life and enhance social inclusion for all generation
in declining and ageing areas.
The project is supported by the ERDF through the INTERREG IVC programme.
