Maseltov: learning basic language skills through mobile services

In terms of e-inclusion, there still is a world to win in Europe. The FP7 project MASELTOV recognises the major risks for social exclusion of immigrants from the European information society. The consortium involved researches and develops novel ICT instruments to foster local community building, and to raise consciousness and knowledge for the bridging of cultural differences.

Mobile based services for the appropriation of highly relevant daily skills
plaatje maseltovMASELTOV, a shorthand for Mobile Assistance for Social Inclusion and Empowerment of Immigrants with Persuasive Learning Technologies and Social Network Services, currently works towards mobile based learning opportunities, mainly for immigrants wishing to learn the host country’s language. The technical side of the project is linked to mobile phone services (a gadget nearly all people have), embedding social computing services motivating informal learning for the appropriation of highly relevant daily skills.

E-inclusion at the interplay of learning and social computing

Through its accessible technology and a regular learning programme, the project motivates immigrants for the appropriation of the local second language. This should lead to basic literacy, and an increased cultural understanding.  MASELTOV takes advantage of the interplay between learning and social computing in order to apply learning through communication as well as in the situated context, meaning right at the spot where it matters, for instance when making a purchase.

Project progress
The project will run until the end of 2014, including 14 partners from all over Europe. The project website will offer regular updates of the project, which you can access though the See Also folder nesxt to this article.
