Youth on the Move

Youth on the Move is a collective term for initiatives that focus on the improvement of training and education of young people all over Europe. It is part of the Europe2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. 20 percent (almost 100 million people) of all EU inhabitants are aged under 30, and are therefore pivotal to the European economy. At the same time, more than 20 percent of all youngsters are currently unemployed.

Goals

According to the EU2020 strategy 75% of Europeans from age 20 to 64 should have paid jobs by 2020. To establish employment among youngsters, Youth on the Move plans on improving education in the EU. It aims to adjust the supply side of education to young people’s ambitions, needs and wishes. Students will be encouraged to go and study abroad on European scholarships. Also, EU Member States will be asked to ensure effective and simple transition from education to work.

Limitations

Although Youth on the Move is an important and needed effort, it should be kept in mind that labor markets are often regulated by Member States themselves. Therefore it may be hard to improve youngsters’ position and chances on the labor market on a European level.
