Research Park for knowledge-based business development - Svendborg, DK

Problem

Svendborg is the capital of the southern parts of Fyn and the surrounding islands. This area has experienced a reduction in dominant traditional businesses and several companies have been closed down. The companies in this area have to be more focused on competing globally and need to have a greater knowledge about products and production.

Description

The research park shares a building with two private companies based in Svendborg. The research park is owned by Svendborg local authority, which rents out the office space to other private companies. The objective for this projectis to stimulate and accelerate knowledge-based business development in Southern Fyn and the surrounding islands.

The research park in Svendborg is based on knowledge transfer with Syddansk University in Odense and other universities in Denmark and other countries. The objective is not to do basic research but to enable knowledge transfer between businesses and researchers leading to innovation, cutting-edge research and new products.

Results

75% Of the park has been rented out to R&D companies. The future R&D environment has in this way already been ensured. The companies will fit very well into the already existing R&D environment.

EU involvement

This practice was presented at the Fourth Best Practice Conference New Horizons in Graz, Austria on 15 November 2006. The conference aimed at promoting exchange of experience and dissemination of best practice between authorities involved in the implementation on EU Structural Funds Programmes in Europe. It was destined to contribute to improving quality of implementation of Structural Funds on the basis of project presentations and visits.
