Universities may drive economic revival
12 Jan 2010In the past decades, most European cities have moved from industrial to service-based local economies. As a result, knowledge-intensive industries have become increasingly important. Naturally, universities play a key role in the provision of human resources and knowledge for these industries. According to a Birmingham Post article by Dermot Finch, chief executive of Centre for Cities, an independent research and policy institute based in the United Kingdom, the interaction and cooperation between universities and the private sector may be able to revive the economy in the West Midlands region. Aston University has developed the 'Innovation Voucher Scheme' to promote the collaboration between the two sectors; a scheme which could easily be applied in any other city region. Apart from in the West Midlands, similar schemes are already in use in The Netherlands and Ireland.
