OECD LEED Trento Centre for Local Development
04 Dec 2007In order to promote local development and advance the social economy, innovative ideas are needed. The OECD LEED Trento Centre for Local Development in Trento, Italy, supports local governments and helps them build local development capacity. The dissemination of best practices, the improvement of the quality of public policy and the strengthening of the relationship between policy makers are some of the main objectives of the centre. Through different events, such as conferences and training courses, local actors are trained to create and improve local development capacity.

Football Information Technology: Introducing ICT to SMEs through enthusiasm for football
29 Jan 2008Football Information Technology (FIT) encouraged SMEs in the East Midlands (UK) to take up training in ICT. To attract potential users the project used the popularity and branding of Nottingham Forest Football Club to attract participants. 16 owner managers completed 40 hours of ICT training and integrated the ICT dimension into their businesses. The objective of the project was to engage SMEs in ICT training using a novel location to attract participants. Participants were introduced to eight office applications to demonstrate how ICT could be integrated into and enhance their businesses. The objective was to ensure that the businesses adopted and integrated technology and consequently improved their contribution to economic regeneration in the region.

ASC Report 'Mind the skills gap': Sustainable communities need improved knowledge and skills
26 Nov 2007The creation and maintenance of sustainable communities depends on the efforts of a wide range of occupations. However, there is growing evidence that many of these professions face acute recruitment shortages in the UK. It also seems that there is a lack of essential generic skills among professionals. In the light of these developments, a major piece of research was undertaken by Arup on behalf of the Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC). The study provides the first cross-sector assessment of supply and demand of skills required to deliver sustainable communities. It provides detailed information on current and forecasted labour shortages and skills gaps, by profession and by region.
