    The United Kingdom has a structural youth unemployment problem. The current economic crisis in the UK is, for a large part, driven by low levels of demand for young people’s labour. However, even before the crisis began, somewhere between 7 to 9 percent of all young people were already heading for long-term unemployment. Current numbers show that over 1 in 5 of all young people in the UK are currently not in education, employment or training (NEET).

    Kruiskamp/Koppel is a district in the city of Amersfoort with many gallery flats, anonymous open spaces, few welfare provisions and a great diversity in terms of residents. There are many social problems, long-term unemployment is relatively high, there is a great deal of unemployment among immigrants, there are many specials needs students in the schools and the perceived level of unsafety within the district is high.

  • Delfshaven practical training centre - Rotterdam, the Netherlands

    The Delfshaven district is home to an estimated 3,385 young people aged between 14 and 23 without a basic qualification for the labour market. A large proportion of these young people left education more than 1½ years ago. On 1October 2003 1,175 young people were registered as unemployed, of which a large proportion had no qualifications. It should be noted that a substantial proportion of young people do not register anywhere. The actual number of unemployed young people without a basic qualification can therefore assumed to be higher. The Delfshaven practical training centre will help give young people a better position in the labour market.

    Der Würfel is a socio-economic enterprise and offers services in the field of renovation work in apartments, transports, help in vacating apartments, second-hand-trade (textiles, furniture).
    Socio-political objectives are:
    - offering fixed-term employment for one year for long-term unemployed men andwomen from 19 to 45 years of age;
    - thus giving the possibility of regular work in various fields;
    - to offer vocational orientation and supervision,
    - to help the target groups to manage personal problems which impeded regular work so far;
    - to offer the possibility of qualification in the fields of retail trade (apprenticeship and final exam) for women and in painting trade (for women andmen).
    Besides employment and qualification the regulation of specific problems (like debts) is done in the enterprise by the social worker.

    The New Deal for Communities (NDC) Programme is one of the most important Area-Based Initiatives (ABIs) ever launched in England. In these areas, each on average accommodating about 9,800 people, NDC Partnerships are implementing approved 10 year Delivery Plans. The Programme is designed to improve outcomes in relation to: three ‘place-based’ issues: crime, the community, and housing and the physical environment. And three ‘people- based’ considerations: education, health, and worklessness.
