Approval UCLG Policy statement: "Culture: the Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development"
During the 3rd World Congress of UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) in Mexico City on the 17th of November 2010, the Executive Committee has approved a Policy statement on Culture as the Fourth Pilar of Sustainable Development. The document is an important milestone in embracing sustainable development into local cultural policies.
Description
According to UCLG’s policy statement, UNESCO, the World Summit on Sustainable Development, many researchers and policy makers, culture can contribute to create a sustainable society. Culture reflects many sectors related to education, the economy, science, communication, the environment and international cooperation. Embedding sustainability into these sectors by using culture would make the world more healthy, safe, tolerant and creative. For this, local governments should promote sustainable models which meet the needs of not only our current, but also our future society. UCLG’s policy statement describes how local actors and World Organisations can include sustainability into day-to-day life. Concrete actions and recommendations are formulated, such as:
- Conducting international lobbying activities;
- Exchanging practices, experiences and mutual learning;
- Using capacity building projects.
The Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development creates bridges with
the other three dimensions (economic growth, social inclusion and
environmental balance) and matches well to the objectives of these
other pillars. This policy statement will be implemented within the
framework of the ‘Agenda 21 for culture’, an agreement between
cities and local governments worldwide to protect human rights,
cultural diversity, sustainability, participatory democracy and for
creating conditions for peace.
