Advice on intrusion for Belgian citizens
A personal advice on intrusion in residences has proven to be successful in Belgium. Research amongst 1200 citizens show that the intrusion prevention advice given by the municipality and the police has seen to it that participating citizens have adopted specific measurements against burglary at their homes.
Majority of participants are extremely positive
This service given for free by the municipality and police in Belgium started up in 1995 and is stimulated by the ministry of Internal Affairs. A great majority of participants – 90 percent – is extremely positive about the advice given to them and would recommend this service to others.
Citizens follow half the advice
An obstacle in implementing the organisational, structural and electronic measures to prevent burglary are the costs, according to the prevention adviser who bases this statement in home vists. Half of the citizens who participated in the research ‘Inbraakpreventief advies in België. De mening van de burger’ (Intrusion prevention advice in Belgium. The views of the citizens) only follows up on half the advice given to them. According to the researchers it would be most beneficial if the advisers would focus more on organisational and structural measures which require little to no financial investments from citizens.
