The VoorleesExpress stimulates children to learn to enjoy reading

The VoorleesExpress introduces low-literate families to reading books with each other. This service stimulates children to learn to enjoy reading. Simultaneously, the language development is enhanced within families. In each participating family, a reader visits and reads books to and with the children. A good way to get to know each other.

Empowering parents to read to their children

A volunteer visits the family every week during half a year to read to the children, for 1 hour on a fixed day and time. The participating families experience difficulties with the Dutch language. The children have insufficient language skills to perform well at school and the parents often have had little schooling and/or don't know how to read to their children. The volunteer introduces books and dialogic reading within the family and empowers parents to read to the children themselves. The goals of The VoorleesExpress are:

  • Stimulate children to enjoy books;
  • Enrich the home literacy environment;
  • Promote children’s language skills.
