Delft contributes to UN´s Millennium Development Goals
30 Jan 2010The municipality of Delft has a long tradition of international relations in developing countries. In 1984 Delft started to build up bands with the city Estelí, in Nicaragua due to the revolution of the Sandinistas. Members of the University Delft went to Estelí to support the revolution in order to strike against the dictatorship. Later on, in 1994 the municipality of Delft also started cooperation with the town Mamelodi in the district Pretoria/ Tshwane. When the Apartheid was ended, social institutions and the city of Delft decided to support the start of the new South Africa. Delfts involvement with both of the cities (Estelí and Mamelodi) can be seen as a town twinning partnership. With these partnerships Delft contributes to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and can be seen as a Dutch Millennium Municipality. The city of Delft tries to improve the economical and/or health situation in these Third World towns or cities. These town twinning relations in Nicaragua and South Africa are part of Delfts international solidarity programme.

Ethnic diversity reduces individual trust in neighbourhoods
18 May 2008In 2007, Putnam claimed that in the short run, immigration and ethnic diversity tend to reduce solidarity and social capital. He presented new evidence from the United States that in ethnically diverse neighbourhoods residents of all ethnic groups tend to ‘hunker down’. Since Putnam only analysed data for the US, he proposed to test his claim in other countries. This paper by Bram Lancee and Jaap Dronkers provides the analysis of Putnam's claim for The Netherlands. The authors' main question is whether individual trust in neighbours and the neighbourhood can also be explained by ethnic diversity in the neighbourhood in Europe, as Putnam stated.

Social Quartet - Civil actors of social welfare in four Hungarian towns - HU
25 Oct 2007Small and medium-size towns are perhaps the most important scenes of non-profit activities in Hungary. This book reports on research conducted among nonprofit organisations engaged in social welfare activity in four Hungarian towns: Békés, Komló, Sárvár and Sátoraljaújhely. The investigation provided the opportunity to examine similarities and differences between the towns and also to draw certain conclusions. In Hungary recent years numerous representative empirical surveys have examined the place of nonprofit organisations in the welfare model. Experts concluded from findings that civil organisations are playing a big role in easing social and social welfare tensions, particularly in local societies. At the same time it also became obvious that substantial differences can be found from one region and area to another and even from one town to another in the tasks undertaken by the nonprofit organisations. For this reason, with the support of Vienna-based Institute for Human Sciences, Social Consequences of Economic Transformation in Central Eastern Europe (SOCO) programme, we launched an investigation aimed at comparing the operation of organisations in towns located in different regions of Hungary.
