Citizen Channel in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area
Citizen Channel will promote regional cooperation at local level.
Description
The objective of the project is to develop a model of interaction, a “citizen channel”, between the citizens and the administration of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, a channel crossing municipal and sector borders. The project produces and transmits local information and presents concrete development concepts concerning, particularly, cooperation between municipalities at district level. The project also develops the evaluation of interaction as a support for regional democracy.
The project started with an investigation phase during which information was gathered on current processes in the target area and on needs to develop information transfer and cooperation. In spring 2006, a model of action for interaction and reciprocity was assessed in public workshops, and in public seminars themes were chosen to match the application of the action model.
The application has amounted to
- the setting up of a Border Area Forum
- drawing up local images of the future
- coordinating processes using the local website of the area.
The work will continue with, e.g., developing the evaluation of reciprocity.
Resources
The project is coordinated by HELKA (Helsinki Neighbourhoods Association), an umbrella for district associations in Helsinki. The project is also a part of the Urban Programme for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area 2005-2007.
