Amsterdam: Multicultural stage in Pniël church
In the Pniël church in the Bos en Lommer district, at the crossroads between the old and new west districts, a cultural centre is being created, together with a health centre. The cultural centre will offer a stage and a production facility, as well as production support for promising initiatives that represent a broad range of cultures.
Problem
The project has a threefold objective:
- Stimulating (cultural) entrepreneurship.
- Promoting interaction between different cultures.
- Promoting cultural participation.
Description
The complex consists of a hall, office, artists' and studio space, small-scale exhibition areas and a cafe-restaurant. The intention is to stimulate exchange and interaction in a multicultural environment. Collaboration between the cultural foundation Stichting Multicultureel Podium Mozaïek, the city district Bos en Lommer, the Amsterdam association of General Practitioners and the housing corporation Het Oosten will give the Pniël church a new interpretation.
Approach
The spearheads within the Amsterdam programme document are:
- Improving the physical business environment.
- Stimulating entrepreneurship.
- Improving the job market.
- Socio-economic activation.
- Quality of life and social cohesion.
Results
The expected effect is a self-supporting and profitable set-up and exploitation of the Pniël church, housing a multicultural stage with suitable programming, artists' studios and workshops.
