    Starting your own business can be more difficult if you’re a woman. In general, financial institutions are more reluctant to provide women with capital and, in many instances friends and family are not very supportive. As a result, female entrepreneurship tends to be under-exploited in Greece, even though the female unemployment rate is very high compared with that of men, particularly in the 21-45-age bracket. This encouraged the Ministry for Development to establish an initiative to promote female entrepreneurship.

  • The Global Gender Gap Report 2009

    Iceland (1) has claimed the top spot of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2009 from Norway (3) which slipped to third positionbehind Finland (2). Sweden (4) completed the Nordic countries’ continued dominance of the top four. The report’s Index assesses countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations, regardless of the overall levels of these resources and opportunities. South Africa and Lesotho made great strides inclosing their gender gaps to enter the top 10, at 6th and 10th position respectively. The Philippines (9) lost ground for the first time in four years but remains the leading Asian country in the rankings. Out of the 115 countries covered in the report since 2006, more than two-thirds have posted gains in overall index scores, indicating that the world in general has made progress towards equality between men and women, although there are countries that continue to lose ground.

    In the early nineties, The City of Vienna has launched the first model project ‘Frauen – Werk – Stadt’, a housing project which promotes the role of women in urban development. The key objective of the project is to meet women’s requirements in terms of daily life, housing construction and safety. It also aims to increase women’s recognition in the architects branch and housing sector. After the success of the first Frau -Werk -Stadt I, two sequels followed, using a different approach. All projects share the concept of gender-sensitive planning and are implemented by the City of Vienna- Municipal Department.

Sub-goals will be to identify the appropriate economic policies that integrate full contribution of gender, make adequate support available to them, initiate transfer to partners, and develop enough targeted communication so as to provide higher level decision-making influence that will ease adoption of adequate measures. The partnership consists of 8 partners coming from 7 countries.
