New Medina, developing new towns in South-Mediterranean countries

As city populations are growing rapidly, the need for sustainable and practicable urban planning becomes more important. The project New Medina focuses on the creation of new towns in four Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Italy and France. Through the exchange of experiences and know-how, the network aims to facilitate local authorities and communities in seeking sustainable solutions for urban planning challenges. The project is part of the CIUDAD programme, launched by the European Commission.

Integrated planning strategies for new towns in and outside the EU

With the motto “from pilot towns to sustainable cities” New Medina strives to develop urban planning projects which can serve as models for other towns. To disseminate their knowledge, the network organises expert panels, seminars, workshops, communication campaigns and study visits. In addition, it conducts research and sets up local teams to generate sustainable approaches. All these initiatives aim to improve urban planning in European, but also in North African towns. When it comes to urban planning, energy efficiency, sustainable economic development, good governance and stimulating social cohesion are important factors. The project has a timeframe of three years and is based upon the following key objectives:

  • promoting integrated approaches- strengthening technical and professional skills of the local teams;
  • setting up local strategies for the environment- developing technical skills of the green professions;
  • setting up a network of exchange of good practices;
  • promoting communication between towns;
  • shaping communication tools and documentation on many themes.

The CIUDAD programme, promoting sustainable solutions in EU and ENPI countries

The New Medina project is financed by the CIUDAD (Cooperation in Urban Development And Dialogue) programme, launched by the European Commission. The programme stimulates knowledge exchange among the EU and its partner countries of the Neighbourhood region (ENPI region). In this context, the involvement of local actors is important, especially the way governance is organised in countries. The overall budget of the New Medina project is €710.000,-. Among the towns and cities of Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Italy and France, other partners are involved such as ENTP (European New Towns Platform), the Lazio region in Italy and Touiza Solidarité, a network organisation of Mediterranean countries in Marseille.
