Working for each child to have a real place at school. The views of parents and education professionals on children dropping out of school

This report enables families and education professionals to voice theiropinions in order to tackle the problem of children dropping out of school

Description

There are several avenues for discussion or action to tackle the problem ofchildren dropping out of school. The most conventional and most frequently usedof these options these past few years has been that of support, tutoring orguidance. The partners of Ministry of Education have shown increasing interestin this type of action. However, although they are essential, these measureshave certain limitations.

This report opens the debate on children dropping out of school based on thefield experience of education professionals and by involving families, whoserelationship with school has in fact become difficult due to the way in which itoperates and because of the need to know the codes which govern its good use.

Proposition

This research work was performed with parents from working-class backgrounds,state education professionals and researchers.

Conclusions

This research work has made it possible to deepen knowledge on the causes ofchildren severing ties with school, to gather information and to understand theexperience of parents as regards their relationship with school. It identifiesthe conditions for the educational success of children from working-classbackgrounds, which are specific to the school-family relationship. It identifiesthe possible ways in which parents and education professionals could talk andshare and searches for actions through which the education system could promotethe improvement of this school-family relationship for the benefit of theseyoung people.
