Summary of the "Local social and urban management. Issues and practices in the Rhône-Alpes region" qualification cycle

On 24 November and 1 December, 2009, the resources and exchanges centre for social and urban development (CR-DSU) and the ARRA Hlm organised a qualification cycle on Local social and urban management (LSUM).

Paved with gold: the real value of good street design

According to CABE (UK Commission for Architecture and the BuiltEnvironment) research, well-designed buildings, spaces and places contribute toa wide diversity of values and benefits. The 'paved with gold' project looked atthe question how the extra financial value that good street design contributescan be calculated. In total, ten high streets in London were selected as casestudies. The research showed that better streets result in higher market pricesand that good design is valued by the people who use these streets. Thesebenefits were calculated by using specific tools, such as the pedestrianenvironment review system (PERS), regression analysis and stated preferencesurveys. Because an increased quality in the design of streets has beneficialeffects, design should be of increasing importance to local governments,developers and businesses, researchers state.

Final declaration of the European ministers in charge of urban development

At the invitation of the French Presidency of the EU Council, the ministersin charge or urban development met in Marseille on 25 November 2008 to discussthe “sustainable and inclusive city”.
