Cycle routes link urban play landscapes in Braunschweig
The City of Braunschweig involves children and young people in reshaping playgrounds and links them up through special cycle routes.
Problem
The problem often consists in making existing playgrounds popular and usable. This is the reason why a number of informative and indicative measures was taken.
Description
The „Green City“ department of the City Council of Braunschweig drafted two cycle routes in order to network the city’s playgrounds and youth facilities. A cycle route of 14 km through the inner-city and a peripheral cycle route of 40 km run aside the highly frequented roads through Braunschweig’s play landscape. By cooperating with children and young people the playgrounds could be renewed according to needs. The so-called „jungle playground“, which was planned in a nature-oriented way in the middle of a densely wooded urban area, is especially popular.
Approach
At first, children and young people were involved in reshaping the playgrounds. Many wishes and needs of the target groups were thus taken into account. Besides, the City Council networked the playgrounds based on a city cycle map. The cycle routes and the play stations are explained in a map which can be acquired as flyer and poster.
Results
By involving children and young people, stimulating and appropriate playing opportunities could be created. By means of specific informative activities and public relations, the publicity of the playgrounds and of the connecting routes was increased.
Beneficiaries
The offer first and foremost addresses children and young people but also adults in families, non-profit-making associations, schools and day care centres for children and young people.
