Model project for integrated housing in Günzburg
In Günzburg, an integrated housing project for handicapped and older people as well as single parents was realised. It includes the necessary social infrastructure and counts on mutual support among residents.
Problem
The idea of the project is the socio-spatial integration of people indifferent situations of life partly being in a state of emergency.
Description
At the eastern outskirts of Günzburg, a housing estate with 150 flats and numerous community and service facilities was built. The heterogeneous residents are bound to the principles of „solitdarity, self-help and mutual support“. The space supply is complemented by professional support, nursing services and a kindergarden. The urban planning design is based on a triangular square with four-storey linear buildings, an arcade building and an angular building. The ground floors, which are directed towards the square, house public facilities and shops. The buildings include flats meeting different demands (accessibility, singles and families), community patios and wash-rooms.

Approach
„Bezirk-Schwaben-Stiftung“, a foundation, is the builder and body responsible for the model project. Lightweight walls and control rooms allowed flexible ground plans and made the flats very adaptable. Apart from different individual-related services, the residents are supported by a neighbourhood office and a cultural centre with a kindergarden for children.
Results
Within this neighbourhood, a manifold range of care, nursing and support facilities is combined with a differentiated supply of housing to form a small autonomous urban area.

Beneficiaries
The measure above all addresses older and handicapped people, single parents as well as women in a special state of emergency and families with many children.
Resources
The region of Swabia established a special foundation, „Bezirk-Schwaben-Stiftung“, to realise the project.
