Summary

In the context of the Rio Conference, the Luxembourgish Government approved in 1999 the National Plan for a Sustainable Development. The main objectives of the Plan are the search and the application of a political, economic and social policy thus enhancing the sustainable development of the Luxembourgish economy and society, reducing the use of natural resources and preserving the quality of the environment.
The present document describes the situation of Luxembourg regarding sustainable development, in comparison with the diagnosis presented in 1999. It identifies for all the proposed sustainable development objectives what has been achieved so far and what still needs to be accomplished.
One of the main conclusions is that, for the period 1999-2006, 78.35 per cent of the measures proposed in the National Plan have had some follow up, of which 41.24 per cent are being or will be implemented and 37.11 per cent have already been executed.
