Unemployment among immigrants is increasing drastically
The number of unemployed immigrants from non-western descent in the Netherlands has risen from 99.000 in the first quarter of 2011 to 125.000 in the first quarter of 2012. 15 percent of the non-western labor force now does not have a job. The overall unemployment rate is 6,2 percent. This was announced by FORUM Institute of Multicultural Affairs. Especially younger immigrants have difficulties finding jobs.
Biggest increase in unemployment among young immigrants
The effects of the global economic crisis seem to affect
immigrant youngsters more than their native counterparts. 29
percent of all immigrants under 25 are currently unemployed, which
is a 7 percent increase. The unemployment rate among native
youngsters increased by 1 percent to 9 percent. Immigrants from
Moroccan (39 percent) and Turkish (33 percent) descent face the
highest unemployment rates
Unemployment among immigrants higher regardless level of education
20 percent of lower educated immigrants are unemployed, almost
three times as many as their lower educated native counterparts (7
percent unemployed). Although the unemployment rate among higher
educated immigrants is lower (16 percent), it is also more
than three times as high as the unemployment rate among higher
educated natives (5 percent).
Job growth in healthcare sector
Most labor market sectors will experience a declining demand for
labor. Fewer jobs will be available in the following sectors:
public governance, welfare, industry and construction. Healthcare
is one of the few sectors in which the demand for labor will
increase, as a consequence of a greying population, higher demands
imposed by consumers, and the application of new medical
technologies.
