Shortlisted EUROCITIES 2011 awards entries announced
The EUROCITIES awards recognise outstanding achievement by EUROCITIES members in the delivery of local activities or practices which improve the quality of life for citizens. From over 50 entries this year too the jury have selected 3 shortlisted entries for the categories - innovation, cooperation and participation.
EUROCITIES Award 2011
The awards are judged in the context of the theme of the annual
conference by an independent jury of 5 members representing the
conference theme, academia, EU institutions, media and the third
sector. Jury members change every year.
The Awards 2011 will reward entries that put citizens at the centre
of urban planning and change, promoting environmental
sustainability and social cohesion. They should be strongly linked
to the idea of “smart” cities and making cities become more
liveable, accessible to everybody. This year the awards will
showcase examples of ‘planning for people’ in EUROCITIES’ 3
permanent categories of innovation, participation and cooperation.
In each of these categories the jury will be judging to what extent
a plan (e.g. for a city or neighbourhood) or a development or
regeneration project better reflects the needs of the community
through:
- Innovation – in the way the plan or project is conceived, designed, financed or delivered;
- Participation – of citizens, residents and other stakeholders affected; or
- Cooperation – between the city authority and other partners, such as landowners, agencies, institutions, businesses, investors or developers.
In all submissions the jury will therefore be looking for clear evidence that the plan or the development project:
- as a result of the approach adopted, is significantly different from what might have been normally expected, and
- has attracted support and ‘buy-in’ from the people affected by the plan or development.
And the nominees are…
INNOVATION:
- Berlin: ‘Grasping’ Berlin- ‘shaping’ Berlin
- Nice Cote d'Azur: one ticket, one tariff, one territory
- Rotterdam: ‘do-it-yourself- houses in Rotterdam’
COOPERATION:
- Bydgoszcz: The Mill Island: revitalisation with cooperation of various stakeholders
- Dortmund: Phoenix Dortmund - integrating urban redevelopment with an intense cooperative quality
- Stockholm: the invest in Järva programme
PARTICIPATION:
- Frankfurt am Main: sustainable and energetic reconstruction of the residential area Heinrich-Lüßke-Siedlung
- Lisbon: todos - Caminhada de Culturas - everybody - a walk of cultures
- Zaragoza: esto no es un solar - this is not a plot (recovery of urban empty spaces for new uses)
This year’s conference, held in Genoa from 2 to 5 November, will
focus on ‘planning for people’, so the jury was looking for
projects which successfully demonstrated this theme.
