Croatian local and regional authorities defend minority rights 18-05-2006 The Committee of the Regions (CoR) hosted a seminar on the implementation of
minority rights in Croatia on 16 May. At this seminar Croatia’s Minister for
Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ms Grabar-Kitarovic, highlighted the
special role of local and regional authorities in safeguarding the rights of
minorities in the country.
“Croatia had made progress on the implementation of the constitutional law on
national minorities. Minority rights are at the heart of Croatia’s accession
negotiations to the EU and the government supports the work of local and
regional authorities in the implementation of this important legislation”.
Members of the CoR stated that it was crucial for local and regional
authorities to be fully engaged in the fight against racism, anti-Semitism,
Islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia and in preventing attacks on minority
groups.
