 | EC to reflect on ports policy 06-06-2006 On 8 March 2006 the European Commission (EC) withdrew its proposal for a
Directive on the liberalisation of port services. All eyes now are turned to the
mid-term review of the 2001 Transport Green Paper, expected on 22 June 2006.
This Green Paper will, amongst other things, outline the position of the
Commission on a future European ports policy.
In drafting a new proposal the Commission is now determined to work closely
with all stakeholders. The European Commission has been criticised regarding the
absence of consultation with the sector throughout the passage of the previous
proposal.
As intimated before the European Parliament upon the rejection of the
proposal on port services, President of European Commission explained that the
Commission’s approach will not focus solely on the competition issues raised by
the previous proposal. The executive has notably stressed the need to improve
services and employment in ports, referring especially to working conditions,
access to the profession and training.
