"Youth in Action” programme adopted
29-06-2006

The "Youth in Action" programme, which was adopted unanimously by the Council on 27 June in Luxembourg. The aim of the "Youth in Action" programme is to develop cooperation in the field of youth policies in the European Union.
The focus is on voluntary work within and outside the EU, support for youth facilities, youth exchanges and hence increased mobility for young people. This is intended above all to promote active citizenship and tolerance among young people, particularly with a view to strengthening the social cohesion of the European Union.
The Youth in Action will be allocated a budget of 785 million. Youth in Action is to replace the current YOUTH programme. Youth in Action will focus on the following:
  • Youth for Europe, supporting exchanges, mobility and initiatives for young people and their projects for participating in democratic life;
  • The European Voluntary Service, aiming to promote the participation of young people in various forms of voluntary activity both within and outside the European Union;
  • Youth in the world, supporting projects in countries neighbouring the EU, notably exchanges of young people active in the youth sector and youth organisations, and initiatives enhancing mutual understanding and the sense of solidarity and tolerance among young people;
  • Youth support systems aiming to support active youth programmes at European level (functioning, networking, guidance);
  • Support for European policy cooperation, facilitating structured dialogue between various players in the youth field (young people, training personnel, youth organisations and political representatives).
"I am pleased we have been able to put down another important marker for participation and active citizenship for Europe’s youth during the Austrian Presidency" said Austrian Youth Minister Ursula Haubner. The Programme was negotiated under Haubner’s chairmanship. Support for programmes in the area of youth, citizen participation, culture and consumer protection is one of the pillars of the European Union.
