Europe risks brain drain
12-07-2006

Europe needs to adopt a new approach to innovation. Innovation must be made a priority in European policy. More investment in education, research and business knowledge is necessary. If not, Europe risks brain drain to Asia and the USA. This is the opinion of Finnish State Secretary for Trade and Industry Anssi Paasivirta.
Mr Paasivirta extended his warning addressing the Committee of the Regions' (CoR) Extraordinary Bureau meeting in Turku , South West Finland on 7 July 2006.
Finland plans to encourage new approaches to innovation during its six-month Presidency of the EU. The new approaches do not entail more funding per se, they entail fresh thinking on how to utilise and market innovation. Innovation policy should be aimed stimulating cooperation between universities, companies and the public sector. Mr Paasivirta also sees opportunities for innovation by integrating the private sector into EU cohesion programmes.
