Finland takes up EU Presidency
04-07-2006

On 1 July 2006, Finland has taken up the EU Presidency from Austria. Representatives of the European Commission met the Finnish government in Helsinki to officially kick start the 2006 Finnish EU Presidency. On Monday 3 July, the 25 Members of the Commission and the Finnish Government discussed the agenda for Finland’s EU Presidency.
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso held a press conference at noon. The press conference was webcast.
Before taking up the EU Presidency, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has outlined five priorities for the 2006 Finnish Presidency of the European Union. According to Mr Vanhanen, the Union faces two key problems: weak legitimacy and ineffective decision-making, which lead to lack of visible, tangible results. During its Presidency, Finland will address these two problems.
