Finland takes up EU Presidency 04-07-2006 On 1 July 2006, Finland has taken up the EU Presidency from Austria.
Representatives of the European Commission met the Finnish government in
Helsinki to officially kick start the 2006 Finnish EU Presidency. On Monday 3
July, the 25 Members of the Commission and the Finnish Government discussed the
agenda for Finland’s EU Presidency.
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and President of the European Commission José
Manuel Barroso held a press conference at noon. The press conference was
webcast.
Before taking up the EU Presidency, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has
outlined five priorities for the 2006 Finnish Presidency of the European Union.
According to Mr Vanhanen, the Union faces two key problems: weak legitimacy and
ineffective decision-making, which lead to lack of visible, tangible results.
During its Presidency, Finland will address these two problems.
