Survey shows increase in available public e-services 06-07-2006 The number of European local authorities offering online services, such as
registering a car or applying for a building permission has risen sharply over
the last two years. This is the finding of a survey for the European Commission.
The number of official service providers present online has crossed the 90%
threshold in the EU-15 plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland ('EU-18').
More than 50% of the public administration service providers in the EU-18 and
42% in the new member states offer the same level of service online as they do
offline. Businesses are more likely to find online services than citizens:
Companies in the EU-18 can access 74% of all services online. For the EU-10 the
figure is 55%. Citizens of the EU-18 can only access 37% of services on the
internet; and citizens in the new member states only 33%.
In the last survey, dating back to October 2004, the figures were on average
9.5% lower. The biggest leap has been made in the EU-10. The online
accessibility has risen for both citizens and businesses, by 13% and 14%
respectively.
The survey has been carried out by Cap Gemini for the European Commission.
