URBAN-Housing Intergroup urges EU ministers to include cities 19-07-2006 Jean-Marie Beaupy, chair of the European Parliament's URBAN-Housing
Intergroup, has written all EU ministers in charge of regional and urban policy.
The parliamentary group urges the ministers to allocate and manage structural
funds for inner city problems. In the new cohesion policy, national governments
will draft the so called operational programmes, with or without involvement of
local authorities.
The Intergroup will continue to monitor the evolving EU Cohesion Policy, for
they fear “danger of the misuse of the Structural Funds as regards urban
development”. The group calls for more cohesion in the choice of actions to
co-finance, since now that the operational phase begins, it is “essential to
spend EU money efficiently”.
