World Economic Forum Report shows: “Lisbon” starts paying off 27-09-2006 The World Economic Forum (WEF) released its annual Global Competitiveness
Report on 26 September 2006. With six EU Member States in the top-ten rankings,
the EU gives notice that its policies are starting to pay off. The top ten EU
Member States are Finland, Sweden, Denmark, UK, Netherlands and Germany. The US,
last year’s number one, has fallen back to position six.
The report is seen as a sign that the EU is making progress towards the
Lisbon goal of becoming “the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based
economy in the world” by 2010. Augusto Lopez-Claros, chief economist and
director of the WEF’s Global Competitiveness Network, thinks that a focus on
innovation and technology through investments in infrastructure, education,
scientific research and the establishment of strong intellectual property
protection are “a successful strategy for boosting competitiveness in an
increasingly complex global economy”.
