URBAN Action - Graz/Maribor, 30-31 March 2006
30-03-2006

Introduction
URBAN action is the European Congress of URBAN networks and cities. The theme is "Acquis URBAN: From Vision to Action". The German-Austrian URBAN-Network, the city of Graz and its Slovenian partner city Maribor are organising the congress with the support of URBACT. The Conference’s target audience is urban professionals, not only working for cities but also urban professionals working for regional and national authorities in old and new Member States. The congress will be of particular interest to the new Member States as they do not have any URBAN experience in the current EU structural funding period.
Description
The conference is the follow up to the European Conference URBAN Future which took place in Saarbrucken on 8 and 9 June 2005, at which the vision of the ‘Acquis URBAN’ was articulated. At the conference, old Member State cities will present their experiences with and results of the EU funded urban development initiatives in terms of cohesion, growth and jobs. The conference will provide an overview of past experiences and ongoing preparation activities of European and national URBAN networks, followed by a discussion of future actions. The importance of networking and the exchange of experiences between old and new Member States will be particularly emphasised, to promote the involvement of new Member State actors in European networks.
A European panel with Commissioner Hübner, Members of the European Parliament and national representatives will highlight the current status as well as the political and strategic importance of URBAN-mainstreaming. In addition, twin-presentations by national, regional and city representatives from selected Member States will illustrate how local preparations can link with overarching funding frameworks in the future. For further countries, especially the new Member States, representatives
from ministries will present the current plans for programming the urban dimension at the national or regional level.
More information on the conference can be found on the conference website and in the draft conference programme.
