Forum: EU Urban Policies for Dynamic Cities - Brussels, 25-27 April 2006
25-04-2006

Introduction
What is the role of the European Union in urban policy? What instruments can cohesion policy deliver in support of cities? And what role can other EU policies, such as transport and environmental policy, play? The Committee of the Regions is organising this three day forum on European urban policies.
Description
  • Cities account for the largest concentrations of population in the Member States and consequently have a big role to play in implementing the Lisbon strategy for jobs and growth.
  • Globalisation is radically changing the way they do their business. They have to be competitive if they want to succeed globally, yet it seems there is little public appetite for this to be at the expense of social cohesion and the European model.
  • The Lisbon strategy points the way forward, but how can cities concretely define policies that will enhance both their competitiveness and social cohesion?
At the Forum, the following people, amongst others, are expected to give their opinion on the issue at hand:
  • Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for transport;
  • Paolo Costa, Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism;
  • Sir Albert Bore, Chairman of the Committee of the Regions Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy;
  • Danuta Hübner, Member of the European Commission responsible for Regional Policy;
  • John Prescott, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom;
  • Gerardo Galeote Quecedo, Chairman of the European Parliament Regional Development Committee;
  • Jean Marie Beaupuy, President of the European Parliament Urban-housing Intergroup;
  • Michael Häupl, CoR rapporteur, Mayor of Vienna, President of the Council of European Municipalities and Cities (CEMR);
  • Richard Leese, President of Eurocities and Leader of Manchester City Council, UK.
