Creating a sustainable future – Annual Global City Forum - Lyon, 17-19 May 2006
17-05-2006

Introduction
Global City and the City of Lyon together organise the 2006 Global City Forum. Approximately one thousand participants and about on hundred speakers are expected to participate in the 2006 edition. This year’s theme is ´Creating a sustainable future´.
Description
Global City is the international forum for urban decision makers. Over 1,000 urban experts and policy makers are expected to take part in the Global City Forum 2006. At the conference a wide range of issues will be addressed, including:
  • Sustainable development as a framework for local governance: an extra burden or valuable investment in the future?
  • The Lisbon Strategy and Gothenburg Commitments: will the environment suffer in the race for Europe to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy?
  • How to make a market eco-friendly: does sustainable development make business sense?
  • Performance assessment: whose definitions and whose responsibility?
  • Putting an end to single land-use development and automobile-dependent design: will the ‘carrot and stick’ approach really succeed?
  • Building sustainable cities: public and private perspectives on where the money will come from (for transport, housing and other major infrastructure projects).
  • European expansion and integration: how to maintain inclusive societies in the face of change?
  • World cities under threat: benchmarking crisis management models.
  • The compact city: is urban sprawl inevitable? And if so, how should it be managed?
  • People, not just trees: the social imperatives of sustainable development.
  • Redeveloping, retrofitting and redesigning our communities: changing the past to build a better future.
