OECD Forum – Balancing Globalisation – Paris, 23 May 2006
23-05-2006

Introduction
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is organising a conference on the issue of globalisation. At the Forum, special attention will be paid to the issue of “Globalisation and cities”.
Description
At the OECD Forum, the following broad themes will be addressed:
  • solving global economic imbalances;
  • optimising the contribution of financial markets to economic growth;
  • reaping the full benefits of technology and innovation;
  • managing global challenges like pandemics and natural disasters;
  • managing the successful integration of China and India into the world economy;
  • creating jobs in the 21st century;
  • ensuring that trade and investment are effective and ethical motors for development.
One of the topics at the OECD Forum is “Globalisation and cities”. Cities are motors and magnets of the global economy. They generate new technologies, produce a growing share of international trade and attract both financial flows and migrants. The following questions will be discussed:
  • To what extent do cities lead national economic growth? What does this mean for governance at the national level?
  • How do cities compete in the globalising world economy? Are there winners and losers?
  • Does the shift towards more knowledge-based urban economies exacerbate social exclusion? How to promote social cohesion, which is also a key foundation of economic competitiveness?
