World Urban Forum III – Vancouver, 19-23 June 2006 19-06-2006 Introduction The third UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum takes place in Vancouver, Canada. The
2006 World Urban Forum (WUF) offers opportunity to discuss international
cooperation in urban development and sustainable urbanization, and to start the
development of models that can be used to address urbanization issues in cities
around the world. This third World Forum marks the 30th anniversary of HABITAT
I, the meeting that led to the establishment of UN-HABITAT.
Description
More than 4,000 urban professionals from all over the world are expected to
participate in the Forum’s programme. Those professionals will represent a wide
array of organisations: non-governmental organizations, community-based
organizations, urban professionals, academics, governments, local authorities
and national and international associations of local governments.
The World Urban Forum is an initiative of the United Nations’ Human
Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT). Held every two years, the World Urban Forum
invites governments, local authorities, non-governmental organizations and other
experts on urban issues from around the world to discuss the challenges of
urbanization.
The WUF differs from UN governing bodies because it does not follow the
formal rules of procedure that usually govern official UN meetings. The working
arrangements of the Forum are deliberately kept simple and relatively informal
to generate a healthy and inclusive debate on urban issues. The 3rd World Urban
Forum retains the format of dialogue meetings that provide the main focus of the
Forum, and networking events that allow Habitat Agenda Partners to meet a
narrower, more specialized audience.
