Urban Conditions and Life Chances – Amsterdam, 6-8 July 2006
06-07-2006

Introduction
Some urban environments provide better opportunities for realising social objectives in life, and thus being more attractive, than others. Knowing what set of conditions has what kind of impact on individual life chances is of importance. Understanding these complicated relationships is a challenge for urban researchers. It will help them in developing effective modes of governance and better urban development programmes.
Description
The conference is organized by the Amsterdam institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt) and the Research and Training Network UrbEurope. The conference is an interdisciplinary meeting, open to geographers, political scientists, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, planners and other social scientists.
The conference will be organized in two types of sessions:
  • plenary sessions in the morning, keynote speakers will debate recent research developments and questions related to various aspects of the conference theme;
  • workshops in the afternoon, focused on issues proposed by participants. Aim of the workshops is to expose different dimensions of urban conditions and life chances; selected participants will present their papers for discussion.
At the conference five workshops are organised:
  • social interactions and dynamics in the urban region;
  • life courses and time-space behaviour;
  • urban conditions for creative knowledge;
  • area-based urban programmes and new local governance;
  • the urban context and exclusion.
Participants are invited to contribute a paper on one of these five themes, to be discussed during the relevant workshop. The deadline for sending abstracts is 3 April 2006.
