International Conference on Urban Ecology – Berlin, 15-16 September 2006 15-09-2006 Introduction The theme of the third international conference on urban ecology is
“Shrinking Cities: Ecological Consequences and Challenges for Urban
Development”. The postgraduate research training group "Perspectives on Urban
Ecology" (Graduiertenkolleg) organises this conference.
Description
The conference focuses on the topic of shrinking cities. The phenomenon of
shrinking cities can be observed in many post-industrial countries, e. g.
Germany, England, USA. Cities are affected by shrinking processes in several
ways. The consequences are reflected in social, economic and ecological
dimensions. The objective of the conference is to initiate a discussion about
the different dimensions. Aim of the conference is to start a dialogue between
natural and social scientists.
The postgraduate research training group "Perspectives on Urban Ecology" was
established in 2002 at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. It gives young
scientists the possibility for further academic qualifications. This program
includes not only research activities in various disciplines but also an
extended educational agenda.
The current postgraduate research training group deals with shrinking cities
and structural changes as opportunities for the development of urban nature and
enhanced environmental quality for city dwellers. Fourteen scholarships have
been given to young scientists working at different institutions in Berlin. The
projects focus on processes, consequences and chances connected with shrinking
cities. Great emphasis is put on an interdisciplinary approach.
