Urban Life, Boundaries and Transformations, IFHP-congress - Geneva, 10-13 September 2006
10-09-2006

Introduction
The 50th World Congress of the International Federation for Housing and Planning, IFHP, takes place in Geneva on 13-16 September 2006. The congress theme is ´Urban life, boundaries and transformations´.
Description
The programme includes general physical limits as well as several new and different boundaries, all of which are throwing up new challenges for the urban planning profession. Globalisation, mobility, urban sprawl, ecological footprints, multi-ethnicity, multi-culturality: these issues demonstrate that there is a general increase in scale affecting social trends. On the other hand, there is a counter-tendency towards fragmentation in the various fields included in housing and planning. Local identification, social fragmentation and the need for good governance challenge us to adjust our approaches to the city of today.
Sub-themes
The discussions will take place in three sections over three days. Every morning, one of the sub-themes will be presented during a plenary session. The sub-themes are:
  • Boundaries and networks: Spatial and temporal transformations;
  • Boundaries and powers: Shattered and federated governance;
  • Boundaries and societies: Urban forms of segregation and solidarity.
Call for papers
The organisers invite researchers and those active in the field of urban disciplines (sociology, economy, architecture, and planning) to submit brief papers dealing with the congressional theme. Accounts of personal experiences will be welcome. Papers may put forward hypotheses, examine specific issues or present analyses, practical projects or research results.
The themes for the papers at the 2006 congress are the following:
  • Policies for managing urban sprawl;
  • Institutional transformations: mergers, hierarchies and forms of cooperation;
  • Transborder cities and societies: how can one live with the border?
Authors are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words by 1 February 2006 at the latest. They should be sent by e-mail to the congress secretariat.
More information can be found on the congress website or at the IFHP website (see links below).
