World Conference on Accelerating Excellence in the Built Environment – Birmingham, 2-4 October 2006

Introduction
The World Conference on Accelerating Excellence in the Built Environment will bring together industry, NGOs, government and academia. At the Conference national and organisational programmes and best practice cases with the aim of improving urban development will be presented. Key stakeholders will be urged to formulate new mechanisms to support local, national and regional initiatives to foster sustainable urbanization through new partnerships among international institutions, national and local governments, and civil society organizations.
Description
At the conference, the following topics will be debated: 
  • urban governance and secure tenure; 
  • housing and urban development; 
  • affordable housing - research, policy and practice; 
  • sustainable development and urbanisation; 
  • international best practice; 
  • planning and design; 
  • engaging communities.
The event is hosted by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence in collaboration with the UK Chartered Institute of Building and the British Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Centre for Procurement. The United Nations and the World Bank are anticipated to take part in the conference as well.
