City Regional Connectivity as a Motor for Competitiveness in a Globalizing World – Rotterdam 29 November–1 December 2006
29-11-2006

Introduction
Belonging to the 'core region' of the EU and containing two important 'Gateways to Europe' Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam, the geographic location of the Randstad Region and the city of Rotterdam is excellent. Moreover throughout the years this Region has successfully exploited this position through good infrastructures. But new challenges arise regarding increasing city region competition on a global scale, the development of new transportation and ICT technologies and the conflict between the advantages of good connections and the disadvantages concerning environmental issues.
Description
Prominent speakers from all of Europe will give their view on these matters. We will have presentations from researchers, consultants and companies on trends in infrastructure and how cities can develop strategies to benefit from this in an economic positive way. Partner cities will tell how they successfully position their region internationally. Finally, Rotterdam will demonstrate how it improves the economic performance of its important nodes like the port, the regional airport and the central station area.
The conference is organised by COMPETE, a network of European city-regions established with the aim of exchanging best-practices on how to improve city-region competitiveness. The members of the network are Barcelona, Dortmund, Helsinki, Lyon, Munich, Rotterdam and Sheffield. Supported through European Interreg IIIC funding, the seven European cities started to work together in October 2004 to develop a stronger evidence base with a view to develop robust and transferable models for successful city-region competitiveness.
COMPETE focuses on five key drivers identified by the earlier study and directly relevant to the Lisbon Agenda:
  • the knowledge economy and innovation;
  • human capital;
  • connectivity;
  • quality of life;
  • governance and strategic capacity.
