International New Town Institute - First seminar – Almere, 22-23 November 2006

Introduction
The International New Town Institute organises its first seminar on 22-23 November 2006. The two-day seminar will offer an overview of the current field of research and invites participants to comment on the preliminary research agenda. The New Town Institute is a scientific research institute focusing on new towns all over the world.
Description
The Institute will study the theory and practice of new town development, the specific conditions and experiences of their initial development and their comparative social strengths and weaknesses as against existing cities and towns.
The seminar will serve as an introduction of participants in the new institute to members of established scientific institutes of urban studies in general as well as an opportunity to discuss what may be the role of new towns in the growth of worldwide urbanization with some two billion new city dwellers in the next 25 years.
The following topics will be debated: 
  • The role of new towns in worldwide urbanization 
  • New towns in history 
  • Planning models and processes 
  • Experiences in today’s new towns
