URBANGUARD final conference – Nicosia, 7 December 2006 07-12-2006 Introduction The URBANGUARD LIFE-Third Countries project pioneers the introduction of
sustainable development principles in Cyprus. The URBANGUARD final conference on
7 December 2006 in Nicosia will present the results of the project.
Description
The conference will discuss the value of the concept of sustainability for
Cyprus, the use of indicators to monitor sustainability, the benefits of the
URBANGUARD approach, adapting the URBANGUARD indicators to the realities of
planning in Cyprus, the practicalities of the system, and use of geographic
information systems (GIS) within URBANGUARD.
In Cyprus, the planning system has until now been measuring and monitoring
complex development needs and problems without the use of a universally accepted
planning analysis tool, which would facilitate public consensus in planning
choices and strategies. Through a pilot project in Strovolos, a municipality of
Nicosia, the project has defined urban sustainability indicators and delivers a
GIS-based planning tool for use by planners and authorities when preparing and
reviewing development plans.
