Regional policy responses to demographic challenges – Brussels, 25-26 January 2007

Introduction
DG Regio is organising a conference on "Regional policy responses to demographic challenges". More than 500 participants from regions all over Europe are expected to discuss how European regional policy allows regions to respond to demographic challenges. The event will showcase examples of best practice in order to provide learning opportunities for Structural Funds managing authorities and others.
Description
At the conference, nine workshops will cover three themes:
Theme 1: Managing and Benefiting from Demographic Change 
  1. Active ageing strategies: planning and adaptation of infrastructures to demographic change 
  2. Supporting new markets: the creation of specific goods and services for elderly people 
  3. Attracting and retaining people at work: adapting regional and local labour markets
Theme 2: Diverse territories, diverse problems? 
  1. Developing rural and sparsely populated and ultraperipheral areas: strategies and actions 
  2. Urban areas and congested areas 
  3. Potential of e-inclusion to strengthen territorial cohesion
Theme 3: Regions learning from each other 
  1. Mobilising the full potential of people; Regions Cities and congested areas adapting labour markets 
  2. Regions working together to seize the opportunities presented by demographic challenges 
  3. Regions working together through interregional cooperation
DG Regio invites interested parties to present their views on the topic in a paper. Papers must cover one of the nine workshop themes. Selected papers will be presented at the conference. Deadline for submitting a paper is 6 November 2006.
A draft conference programme is available on the conference website (see link below). The final programme will be published in December 2006, including the possibility to register.
