Building culture for sustainable urban development – Hamburg, 26-27 April 2007
26-04-2007

Introduction
The European Forum for Architectural Policies (EFAP) is organising a conference on building culture as an indispensable part of integrated and sustainable urban development. Aim is to further enhance and promote the role of architecture and design for sustainable cities.
Description
The EFAP proposes a comprehensive understanding of building culture (“Baukultur”), a term that describes the sum of all economic, technical, social and ecological aspects that influence the quality of the built environment. This holistic quality is being recognised as an increasingly significant factor in the competition to attract commercial enterprises to cities.
The idea is to respond to the growing importance of building culture for European development by coordinating European economic, regional, cultural and environmental policies. Germany is following through on the 2001 EU Council Resolution on Architectural Quality in Urban and Rural Environments. The plan is to enhance the exchange of building culture experience in Europe and to include the Federal Foundation for Building Culture as an active new partner in the international network.
The outcome of this conference will be included in the planned 'Leipzig Charter' (Informal Ministerial Meeting on Urban Development, 24 May 2007 in Leipzig).
