(IACP) are organising the final conference of the Plan the City with the Port
(PCP) project: “Plan the City with the Port – strategies for redeveloping
city-port linking spaces”.
Description
Over a little less than the last two decades, port cities have thrown
themselves into ambitious redevelopment projects for the abandoned port spaces
that are the connecting spaces between the historical places of the urban
centres and the zones of activities linked to the port. These spaces are today
territories with high stakes: the city can provide there an alternative offer in
terms of quality accommodation, of public spaces and installations capable of
attracting new categories of population. Putting such spaces into a new
perspective enables the port city to modify a sometimes deteriorated image and
to regain its attractiveness for private investors.
In parallel to these urban objectives, the port authorities are trying to
maintain their competitiveness by adapting the spaces under their management to
the requirements of the international maritime operators. The development of
logistics and tertiary activities linked to the international port function
strongly incites them to resist the urban pressures exercised on the connecting
spaces between city and port in order to be able to guarantee for business
enterprises the best suited conditions for their activity.
