European Neighbours’ Day 2007 – All over Europe, 29 May 2007 29-05-2007 Introduction The European Neighbours’ Day is an initiative of the European Federation of
Local Solidarity. Based in Brussels, its objective is to foster mutual community
support in all its forms, by creating networks for exchanges on neighbourly and
community practices. This year the European Neighbours’ Day will take place on
Tuesday 29 May.
Description
In all Europe, the individualism, the withdrawal into oneself and the
loneliness increase. Everywhere the social bond distends. Each resident is
invited to make a simple gesture at the same time throughout Europe. To invite
your neighbours to share a nice time around a buffet or a lunch, favours social
cohesion and creates new solidarities.
The mechanism is simple: European Neighbours' Day is an event which occurs
every year on the last Tuesday of May. The cities or partner organizations
receive a communication kit to promote the party and rouse people's interest.
Then, it is up to each group of citizens to act and organise their own party.
Through the exchanges among European residents, the sharing of experiences
and good practices, this event gives to citizens the opportunity to interact and
to join in the construction of a Europe ever closer and more human. It enables
to give a feeling of common membership and to forge a European identity based on
socialising and solidarity.
