COMPETE final conference – London, 5 June 2007

Introduction
The final Compete event will be held in London at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from the 4th till the 5th June 2007. The event will draw together the major findings generated by the network. The conference is titled 'Competitive European Cities: What Messages for the UK?'.
Description
Phil Woolas MP, Minister for Local Government and Community Cohesion will provide the keynote speech outlining the UK's policy for competitive cities. Presentations from European partners will follow. The conference will be chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson.
The COMPETE project is a dynamic European network of Cities and City-Regions established in order to share experience and raise the profile of major regional cities to enable them to fulfil their performance as drivers of urban renaissance and economic competitiveness. The conference will offer delegates the opportunity to hear final recommendations from this 2 year project, direct from the key partners in the project, Barcelona, Dortmund, Helsinki, Munich, Rotterdam, Lyon and Sheffield.
Phil Woolas, MP, Minister for Local Government and Community Cohesion will provide the keynote speech outlining the UK's policy for competitive Cities. This will be followed by a series of presentations from our European Partners who will present the key findings and policy recommendations across a range of economic indicators including creative industries, human capital, innovation, clusters, connectivity and networks of competitiveness. The conference will be chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson CBE, Director of the European Institute for Urban Affairs at Liverpool John Moores University.
The timing of this conference is critical in shaping future policies of Cities and City Regions and provides the opportunity to debate the policy implications with senior officials from local and central government, the EU commission, universities, other European cities, the media, think tanks and research institutions.
