The challenges of competitiveness and the strength of the regions – Paris, 25-26 October 2007 26-10-2007 Introduction The local level is where real business roots. But enterprises grow in a
global world. Yet, do Europeans really build from the local level to address the
global competitiveness challenge? Can we face globalisation better by building
from Europe’s local strengths and innovations? These are the main questions that
are addressed at the 2007 edition of the annual conference of Eurochambres - the
Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Description
2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the European Union: fifty years of common
efforts to turn the Union into “the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based
economy in the world”. This challenge goes hand in hand with another key
objective of the Union: to ensure that European regions achieve economic and
social cohesion.
This objective has been put to the test during the successive enlargements of
the EU over the years because of the enormous economic and social disparities
between the regions. Nevertheless, remarkable results have been achieved.
2007 also marked the beginning of a new programming period for cohesion
policy with the ultimate objective of achieving the political will not only to
combat regional disparities, but also to make our businesses and our regions
more competitive with respect to their global rivals.
In other words, the new regional policy places the reformed Lisbon strategy
at the centre of its preoccupations: to create a greater number of better
quality jobs in a more dynamic, innovative and attractive Europe.
Chambers of Commerce have already been working hard on this. With a network
of over 2,000 regional and local Chambers of Commerce, each year over 30 million
people are trained and over one million companies become globalised, while
another 700,000 are established.
From this local expertise emerges cooperation with the local, regional,
national and European authorities, without which there could be no sustainable
growth.
