The City of Tomorrow – Brussels, 19-20 November 2007 19-11-2007 Introduction What will be the development framework of the city of tomorrow as regards
urban and architectural quality, economic activity and employment, mobility, the
presence of green spaces and social cohesion? Globalisation, urban diversity,
territorial discrimination, urban marketing, innovation and sustainable
management, structuring urban projects, governance, the role of the State, the
Regions and private sector stakeholders, etc. are just some of the key issues
which now require fundamental, far-reaching analysis in the context of the
city's future. These issues will be central in the conference “The City of
Tomorrow”, organised by the Brussels-Capital Region.
Description
Currently, more than half of the world’s population lives “in the city”. In
1900, the urban population was barely 10 per cent. In 1950, it was 30 per cent.
According to the United Nations, this percentage will climb to more than 60 per
cent in 2030. A percentage which has already been largely exceeded in Europe,
since 74 per cent of European citizens live in urban areas. It is therefore no
exaggeration to say that the future of mankind is very closely linked to the
urban issue.
How will these billions of individuals live? What will be the development
framework of the city of tomorrow as regards urban and architectural quality,
economic activity and employment, mobility, the presence of green spaces and
social cohesion?
Globalisation, urban diversity, territorial discrimination, urban marketing,
innovation and sustainable management, structuring urban projects, governance,
the role of the State, the Regions and private sector stakeholders, etc. are
just some of the key issues which now require fundamental, far-reaching analysis
in the context of the city’s future.
On the initiative of the Brussels-Capital Region, the Regional secretariat
for urban development is organising a colloquium entitled “The City of Tomorrow,
Brussels of Tomorrow”, as part of the “Week of the City”. The aim of the “Week
of the City” is to define an urban strategy for Brussels.
