The integration of migrants at local level - The Hague, 28-29 November 2007
28-11-2007

Introduction
The Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) is organising, in cooperation with the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), a conference on the integration of migrants at local level. Under the title ‘Equal opportunities for all: citizenship and human capital in a diverse Europe’, the conference is the answer on the CEMR declaration of Seville on the role of European local and regional governments in relation to migration.
Description
It will bring together politicians, experts and representatives of migrants organisations to explore issues such as social cohesion and citizenship, housing policies and diversity management.
The event will take place within the framework of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. The overall results of the conference will be used in a policy paper and declaration as reaction on the “Handbook on immigration' and ‘Proposals for economic migration' to be published by the European Commission this year.
Speakers at the conference will include:
  • Wim Deetman, Mayor of The Hague, President VNG, First Vice President of CEMR
  • Vladimir Špidla, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities
  • Ella Vogelaar, Minister for Integration and Improvement of Neighbourhoods
  • Halvdan Skard, President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe
  • Ronald Bandell, Mayor of Dordrecht
  • Jeremy Smith, Secretary General of the CEMR.
